Why protect a PDF
A pay stub, a tax notice or a contract can travel further than intended: a shared inbox, a lost USB drive, the wrong recipient. Protect PDF files and encrypt PDF content with a password: only the people you give it to can open the document. Send the password through a different channel than the file, for example by text message.
The file is encrypted with AES-256, the strongest method the PDF format offers. It opens normally in all common readers once the password is entered. The password is never stored or logged: no one can recover it for you, so keep it safe.
Frequently asked questions
Are my files safe?
They are processed on our servers and deleted as soon as the protected PDF is sent back to you. Nothing is kept, neither the file nor the password.
I forgot my password, what can I do?
We can't recover it: it's never saved. Keep an unprotected copy of the document if you're worried about forgetting it.
What password should I use to encrypt PDF files?
At least 6 characters are required, but a longer phrase mixing letters, numbers and symbols is much stronger.
My PDF already has a password, can I change it?
Unlock it first with Unlock PDF, then protect the resulting version with the new password.
Do I need an account?
No. LordOfThePDF works without signing up and without an email address.
